Outokumpu delivers special stainless quarto plates to the new World Trade Center transit terminal, named Oculus, in New York at Ground Zero. The project is one part of the total Ground Zero reconstruction plans. The use of quarto plates made out of Outokumpu's proprietary high strength LDX 2101® duplex stainless steel enables thinner, stronger and more cost efficient design in the construction.
Outokumpu delivers approximately 340 tonnes of stainless steel quarto plates to Cimolai Spa of Italy, which is one of the main steel manufacturers of the Oculus project and responsible for the fabrication of the lower supporting structure in the new transit centre. The plates will be produced at Outokumpu's quarto plate unit in Degerfors, Sweden.
The quarto plates will be welded between carbon steel components and act as a thermal barrier to prevent excessive length expansion and tension in the lower supporting part of the structure.
"Based on the advice from Outokumpu's technical experts, we chose LDX 2101® due to the better mechanical and corrosion resistance properties compared to standard austenitic stainless steel grades. Also, we have good experience in forming and welding LDX 2101® from our previous deal with Outokumpu where we supplied LDX 2101® to a monument in Mexico City, says Cimolai Spa's representative.
In general, the use of duplex quarto plates in demanding construction projects is increasing in popularity. The corrosion resistant high strength duplex grades offer considerable material weight savings and also lower overall life cycle costs to customers.
Outokumpu is a global leader in quarto plates with a global market share of some 20%. The individually rolled wide and thick plates are used for example in chemical tankers, energy industry and desalination plants.
