Pöyry's Energy Business Group has been awarded an owner's engineering services contract for the second and third phase of the Puttalam coal power project in Sri Lanka. The client is the Ceylon Electricity Board, who has entered into an EPC contract with China Machinery Engineering Corporation. The value of Pöyry's services is EUR 8.3 million and the project will be included in Pöyry's fourth quarter order stock. Pöyry has already successfully concluded the first stage of the project.
The power plant is located on the Kalpitiya peninsula on the west coast of Sri Lanka, about 120 km north of Colombo. The remaining phases of the project include 2*300 MW power units, the extension of the offshore coal unloading facilities with barging and unloading cranes on a jetty, and a second 95 km long 220 kV transmission line and remote outdoor substation. The final completion of the entire project is expected by mid 2014.
"This Owner's Engineering assignment is the result of a long-standing relationship with Ceylon Electricity Board and our continuous commitment for the client. It underlines Pöyry's position as a leading consulting and engineering company in the international power industry. Availability of outstanding experts, comprehensive knowledge of large investment projects in the power sector and close day-to-day cooperation with our clients are the success factors in this business", Philipp Elkuch, President, Business Area Central Europe, Energy Business Group says.
Pöyry has been active in the hydro- and thermal power market in Sri Lanka since 1980.
